VOTE SHABNAM AHMED
Democratic Write-in for House of Delegates

My name is Shabnam Ahmed. I ran as a Democrat for the Maryland House of Delegates this past June. I fell short of winning the primary election by just 43 votes.

I want to share the truth with you, the truth of what happened that day:

  1. About 170 ballots from our community were rejected. A recount would have cost over $20,000 and for a challenger like myself, nearly impossible to finance with such short notice.
  2. We won nearly every poll on election day. We lost during early voting, mainly because many so-called “Official Democratic Ballots” were widely distributed and funded by powerful politicians, causing confusion.

In 2020, our district’s boundaries may be redrawn to kick me out of our 23A community. Such has been the fate of competitors that have come so close in the past. If that happens, it would be impossible for me to serve our community that I care so much about, and that I’ve called home my entire life. Therefore, at the behest of many community members, I am running as a write-in candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates this November.

This spring, I ran a 100% grassroots primary campaign, where I door knocked over 5,000 homes in our community (maybe even yours) because I wanted to be a public servant that truly served the public. It’s not too late to make that happen. My name will NOT be on the ballot. Please consider writing me in on November 6, 2018!

Education
Shabnam has a deep connection to the public school system. She, being a graduate of Prince George’s County Public Schools and the former Student Member for the Prince George’s County Board of Education has seen the ins and outs of the system. She understands how things such as aging school infrastructure, oversized classrooms, resource allocation, or lack thereof, and improper oversight and accountability at the administrative level individually affect student success. Shabnam believes that in addition to working on improving our education policies, adequate leadership must be nurtured and accountability must be prioritized. Shabnam will work towards repealing HB 1107 and bringing accountability back to where it belongs: in the hands of the community.
Income Inequality
Shabnam will work to prioritize policies that empower working families by increasing the minimum wage, establishing paid family leave, affordable housing, and support for small businesses. Having served as the President and co-Founder of Moneythink Maryland, Shabnam is dedicated to establishing financial wellness and understands the importance of promoting policy that will help secure the futures for many.
Criminal Justice Reform
Criminal justice reform has been a national problem on many different fronts. Our mandatory minimum sentences and our bail bond system systematically and disproportionately target people of color, and those who cannot afford to take bail. Our policies on crime and justice often perpetuate systems such as the school to prison pipeline and the prison industrial complex. Shabnam supports reforms that work towards promoting alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders.
Clean Energy
As a back country trip leader for the University of Maryland Adventure Program, Shabnam has led various outdoor recreation experiences in efforts to promote environmental stewardship amongst undergraduate and graduate students. Her commitment to environmental health, education, and sustainability led her to support various initiatives as the Vice President of the University of Maryland Student Government Association relating to banning fracking and promoting divestment at the State level. Shabnam believes that we must act now in pushing for sustainability and clean energy policies if we really want to be creating a better world for tomorrow.
Community Engagement
Shabnam believes that in order to serve a community, you must know the community and be a part of a community. It is through the community that you find strength and inspiration. You must know and be sync with those you serve in order to truly serve them. Shabnam has led all of her movements through gathering community support because she understands the importance and potency of grassroots campaigning. From her No Three Terms Movement, to lobbying super delegates, Shabnam has engaged with her electorate in order to address the concerns of her community.
Building a more Inclusive Democracy
Shabnam wants to build a more inclusive democracy through public financing of campaigns. It is no surprise that the influence of big money in today’s politics is a threat to American democracy. It is often money that keeps the playing field uneven for authentic public servants. Many political campaigns in our country, Maryland included, are predominately funded through large contributions from wealthy donors. Candidates that are not incumbents, or do not have the same social capital to draw from these wealthy sources are drowned out, discouraged, and disheartened-along with the voices of the public. Shabnam supports legislation-providing candidates with the option of using public funds to match small-donor contributions. Public financing for elections creates a more competitive, diverse, and inclusive democracy for all.
Supporting our Senior Citizens
Shabnam believes in increasing support for programs and initiatives that allow seniors to age gracefully. Many of the social challenges facing our seniors include but are not limited to, the cost of healthcare, financial security, and abuse/neglect. Shabnam intends on working with senior citizens and senior facilities to address their various needs and work towards ensuring their support and protection.
